Here comes an amazing piece of news for the residents of Chennai city.

The Chennai metro water had announced on Tuesday, 5th November, that Chennai city is not reeling under the water crisis issue. Point is the storage in Chennai city’s major lakes has been increasing steadily due to the rains. The water agency had tweeted that Chennai is officially out of water shortage.

It was later pointed out by some senior officials belonging to the MWD 5 major bodies including those in Red Hills, Poondi and Veeranam tank have storage of 4026 million cubic feet of mcft against the combined storage of 12,722 mcft. It is known that Poondi reservoir continues to get Krishna water.

For the purpose of managing the water crises in the Chennai city, metro water department earlier used buffer sources including agricultural wells, water from Jolarpet by train etc. Now, the water agency is shifting to conventional sources of supply mainly from the water bodies. It has stopped drawing groundwater from the agricultural wells.

It must be noted that rains plus Krishna water have increased the storage in the dry lakes belonging to Chennai city. Cholavaram reservoir received inflow because of the rains in the month of October and this was as per some officials belonging to the WRD or Water Resources Department.

To enable water drawal and water supply, 100 cubic feet per second is being diverted to Red Hills. In a few days of time, the discharge would be increased. It is brought out by the MWD that this would help to sustain water for a period of 6 months.

As per WRD, storage of minimum 5000 mcft would help maintain comfortable water position. At the entry point of Kandaleru Poondi canal, the inflow of Krishna water has dipped to 300 cusecs. To manage Chennai city water supply, the department would request AP government to supply water through the monsoon.
