The Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre has informed that in this northeast monsoon rainy season, there have been only 50% of the expected extent. A related report:

The southwest monsoon rainy season was active with 46% excess rain above the expected average level facilitating the filling of water levels in water sources. However, there has been far less rainfall in the northeast monsoon rainy season this year in Tamil Nadu.

Especially, the expected extent of rainfall in November was far higher as compared to the rain received. As per the statistics, there must have been an average rainfall of 16 cm rain in Tamil Nadu as on yesterday – but, there has been a rainfall for only 8 cm, which is 50% less! In a similar trend, there should have been 34 cm rainfall in Puducherry but the actual rainfall is only 13 cm, 63% less!

As regards the Chennai Metro City, the average expected rainfall is 30 cm. But actually, there has been only 8 cm rainfall, lesser by 74%!

As such, the statistics show that the expected rainfall in this northeast monsoon rainy season from October until yesterday (Monday, 25th November) has been far less than the average level.

As for today’s weather (Tuesday, 26th November), sudden rains are expected in several places due to the phenomenon of thermal convective rain.

There are prospects for heavy rains in a few places in Ramanathapuram, Thoothukkudi, Tirunelveli, and Virudhunagar.

There are prospects of cyclonic winds blowing across the Kanyakumari ocean area today and tomorrow (26th and 27th November). Hence fishermen are warned not to venture into the sea!
