vegetable prices on the rise

The prices of vegetables have gone up suddenly in the wake of drought and inflation. The price of a kilo of beans was Rs. 40 a few days ago but is now going for Rs. 70. A kilo of carrots is now Rs. 40.

Says a market trader in Koyambedu, ‘Several vegetable prices have doubled this time… The summer has shown no mercy towards the farmers. The price rise (will) not abate till the onset of the southwest monsoon in July… Only about 150 lorries arrived instead of the usual 300 lorries, due to poor crops. Many farmers in Tamil Nadu were converting their farming lands into housing plots across the state… Neighbouring Andhra and Karnataka are providing bulk supplies for the Chennai wholesale vegetable market.’

Another trader in Choolai said, ‘While vegetable sellers face a tough time in the movement of vegetables, the performance of fruits is better both in terms of arrival and sales as compared to vegetables. But there is a dip in mango sale this year compared to the previous year… The prices of chilli and pomegranate had reached an all-time high due to the low arrival of lorries at Koyambedu.’
