Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s (BSNL) e-auction of vanity (fancy) numbers seems to not be doing as well as thought. The auction that started on 15th April has seen only 35 bidders till Monday, which is the last date.

Says BSNL’s spokesperson G. Vijaya, ‘With the overwhelming response for the mobile vanity auction, Chennai Telephones launched e-auction for landline numbers too.

‘The auction has seen 35 registrations with the highest number of bids in the level III category, which has a base price of 5,000. We expect over 1,000 registrations as we have two more days to go and we will also go in for multiple phase of e-auctioning, considering that Chennai Telephones is one of the few circles to have lower quantum of surrender of landline phones.

With the possibility of landline number portability, investment on getting a fancy landline number is like investing on an asset and hence there could be higher response in the remaining two days.

‘Vanity numbers are mostly sought after by business persons especially in the service sector and also individuals who have a fancy for attractive number series and sometimes based on belief in numerology too. Generally landline numbers matching the digits of their mobile numbers are also sought by customers in view of easy recall.’
