Southern railways have planned to install toilets in as many as in 200 stations for the commuters in Chennai and in Tamil Nadu and this would make many frequent travellers happy now.

The sources belonging to railways have mentioned that 33 toilets would come up in the Chennai division. NLC or Neyveli Lignite Corporation had offered to fund pre-fabricated toilets using their CSR or corporate social responsibility funds. The decision to set up 33 toilets in the railway stations came after this.

To channelize the CSR funds by finalizing the standard drawing, layouts and tendering Railway Board has assigned RITES India. This RITES India is an engineering consultancy firm belonging to the southern railways is known. RITES India has offered the contract to a Belgium based company after tendering and this company would be executing the project in various railway stations in TN.

Under the scheme, 46 stations across Salem division would get toilets and 55 stations each in Trichy and Madurai has been identified for the installation of toilets. The passengers would give their feedback based on the availability of toilets, cleanliness and maintenance etc. This was as per some senior officials belonging to southern railways. It is worthy to note that these three parameters are also included in the yearly survey on the cleanliness at the stations conducted by a third party agency.

It was brought out by a senior official of the railways that the southern railway`s rankings were steadily improving every year as the result based parameters were given more importance for making a decision on the contracts regarding station cleanliness.

The cleaning contract payment would be based on the feedback of the passengers and this system has been followed since last year by the Chennai division. Every day, the contractor’s representatives would be collecting feedback from the 40 to 50 passengers at the railway stations using their tablets.

As per a source belonging to railways, the passenger would have to rate the cleanliness on scale 1 to 5 and average rating 4 or 5 would be acceptable. Anything below that, the contractor due would be cut.
