The reservoir at Red Hills in Chennai is now making news. It is revealed that the level of water in this reservoir is 88 percent of its capacity. This has brought huge relief for the Chennai city water managers.

According to Mr. T. Prabhu Shankar, executive director MWD, 6064 mcft in the 4 reservoirs was enough to supply water for the Chennai people for 6 months without any issue. The total capacity of Poondi reservoir is 3231 mc ft and on Thursday it had 1497 mcft of water. Against a total capacity of 3300 mcft, Red Hills had 2890 mc ft of water. It is known that Chembarambakkam reservoir has got total capacity of 3645 mc ft and it had 1606 mc ft of water The smallest reservoir at Cholavaram of total capacity 1081 mcft had just 72 mcft water.

Last year, the failure of NE monsoon (that accounts for about 60% Chennai rains) had resulted in less amounts of water at the reservoirs and the combined storage was only 1112 mcft. Mr. Prabhu Shankar was happy regarding the current scenario of more water at the reservoirs.

Through open canals, water from Krishna river in AP flows from Poondi reservoir to Red Hills and Chembarambakkam. Important point is the combined storage level of water in the reservoirs like Somasila, Srisailam and Kandaleru in AP from where water gets released to TN (under Telugu-Ganga agreement) is 252000 mcft of water. The executive director explained about how AP has been releasing water regularly and how on Wednesday 400 cusecs of water was released at zero point.

Out of 8 tmcft water asked by TN, only 4.25 tmcft of water was released by AP. It is now expected that AP would release atleast 3 tmcft water. Many places in Chennai city had improved ground water table due to last year rains and the water levels in Chennai city were measured from shallow observatory open wells by MWD.

The MWD official brought out that at present there is no idea to increase the water supply to the residents in core places. There would be water connections in the added areas.
