Dumping of bio-medical waste like syringes, expired medicines has been creating issues in recent times in Chennai.

Point is many activists and residents continue to find bio-medical waste being dumped at random places on highways outside Chennai. Manivakkam Lake in Vandalur off ORR is the latest dumping place for these bio-medical wastes now and activist Mr. Pugalventhan Venkatesan on Sunday found that bio-medical wastes were dumped near the above-said lake. It must be noted that the waste was disposed of in such a way that would get concealed under the mud.

Mr Pugalventhan then explained how there were many injections under the mud. He shed light on the landfill present near the place and said it was due to this reason this place was chosen for the dumping of bio-medical wastes. Important information is a bill (revealing name of the medical shop) was also found dumped along with the waste and this has raised suspicion that the medical shop might be linked to a small clinic in the neighbourhood or a small hospital.

It must not be forgotten that in the third week of December 2019 bio-medical waste was found dumped in Vandalur. For monitoring all the healthcare facilities and making sure that the used syringes and medical boxes are disposed of properly, TNPCB is responsible. It is now said that the onus of penalising such types of violations falls on the local bodies.

Residents in areas like Tiruneermalai, Kundrathur, Anakhaputhur etc have complained about the dumping of bio-medical wastes in open grounds and in the water bodies is known.
