In T. Nagar in Chennai, 20,480 sqft of land is being used for many years by the Ladies Club of T. Nagar. On Friday, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation had reclaimed this land in T. Nagar. This piece of land is worth Rs 25 cores. T. Nagar is an important locality in Chennai is well known.
It must be taken into account that this land (spread across eight grounds of 1280 sqft) falls under Kodambakkam zone’s ward 136 on Raman Street in T. Nagar and it belonged to the civic body.
This land was given to the club in the year 1944 for the recreation of women and children for their development. As per GCC, the club was not using the land for the purpose for which it has been leased out but the land was used for any illegal purposes. It was in the year 1976 registrar of societies had ruled that the land belonged to the corporation. A decision was taken and as per the decision, it was clear that any encroachment on the government-owned land could be removed and land could be reclaimed.
On Friday, officials belonging to GCC joined with police personnel and seal was put on the door and boards were installed stating the land belonged to the civic body.
After the Madras HC upheld the corporation’s eviction order, in October in 2019, GCC had taken possession of Rs 80 crores plot that was spread over 39,127 sqft and encroached by Anna Nagar Towers club from 1993 is known.
