Plogging event in Chennai beaches grabs attention

Picking up the waste and jogging!!

The Chennai city’s beaches were buzzing with activities on Sunday 2nd February. The waste picking up and jogging or plogging event took place and it saw the participation of 3000 people.

This ploggathon was organized by the corporation of Chennai and the main objective of this event was to stress the importance of solid waste management.

By means of initiatives like source segregation etc, the residents could contribute to the solid waste management and this was as per Mr. G. Prakash, Chennai Corporation commissioner. Keeping the neighborhoods neat and clean is very important and the ploggathon event was conducted to create awareness in this aspect.

It was pointed out that the residents must take their responsibility for handling their waste. For the municipal waste management to be successful, co-operation of the residents is important. This was mentioned by an official. The participants at the ploggathon event came from 17 companies and residents association across Chennai city.

The stretch from Besant Nagar to Tiruvanmiyur RTO office beach was full of people yesterday and they took part in ploggathon. Important point is 3.8 tonnes of waste were collected and it is being segregated now. Later, processing of the waste would be carried out at the decentralized waste management facilities. This plogging event was beneficial for the health of the participants. In the year 2016, plogging was introduced in Sweden is known.

It is now said that every day on the Chennai beaches and on the public spaces large number of residents would take part in plogging events. Every day, 5000 tonnes of waste is being collected by the corporation of Chennai and then the waste gets dumped in places like Perungudi and Kodungaiyur. There would be reduction in the waste dumping in these 2 places in this year.
