If you need to go to the police station with a complaint but feel uncomfortable doing so, here is a solution for you. Chennai Police have now erected complaint boxes where you can lodge your complaints.

‘We have already started putting up complaint boxes in Vyasarpadi. As many as 15 complaint boxes were installed in various areas in the station limit on an experimental basis. If found successful, it will be expanded to other stations’, says a police official.

‘Such complaint boxes will help people provide vital information on various illegal activities in an area… People who want to share information may not want to be identified because they would not want to be targeted by anti-social elements. So, such people can use the complaint boxes. Also, housewives, working women and college- and school-going girls can use them if they face any kind of harassment.

‘All complaint boxes will be opened every morning at 7 am and the complaints taken to the local inspector who would decide on the future course of action… We expect complaints and inputs to differ from area to area. While people in some area will talk about rowdyism and prostitution, people in other areas may want to tell us about eve-teasing and domestic violence’, he said.
