A Robot in Chennai based Government Stanley Medical College Hospital or SMCH is grabbing many eyeballs now!!

Many patients get admitted for treatment in the Covid-19 ward in this hospital and the robot does nursing duties to these patients efficiently. The robot supplies food, water and other medication to the patients. As per the authorities belonging to this hospital, the robot has been used to reduce the number of times a healthcare provider or nurse interacts with a Corona virus infected patient.

State health minister, Mr. C. Vijayabaskar highlighted that the robot was on trial for few days in this hospital and a staff nurse posted at the ward has been trained in operating the robot. On Friday, the state health minister inspected the upcoming 500 bed Covid-19 facility at the hospital. He spoke about how overexposure for staff nurses would be avoided by this robot.

The staff nurses could send food, water and other medicines etc to the patients in Covid-19 ward by using this robot. The minister stressed on the need to protect the healthcare providers from getting infected with Corona virus.

According to Dr. P. Balaji, dean of SMCH, the robot would be reducing the contact of the nurse with the patient. He shed light on the presence of 2-way camera in the robot and explained about how books could also be sent to the patients using the robot. It was later brought out by the state health minister that the Stanley Hospital was in the process of setting up a Covid-19 facility with 500 beds and 100 ventilators.
