In the wake of changed patrolling times by the Chennai Traffic Police, a senior police official has said that there has been a big crack down on drunk driving in the city. According to reports, 5738 cases were booked between April 23rd and May 2nd.
Said the official, ‘The checks were conducted in arterial roads and smaller stretches between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. The police teams are posted every two kilometers… Of the cases, there were 4,194 convictions. 1,034 cases were forwarded for suspension of licences… Of these, 257 were car drivers, 63 three-wheelers and 679 two-wheeler riders… In the coming days the drive will be intensified. We are hoping that road accidents and rash driving will reduce in this manner.’
