Mother’s Day is celebrated all over the world on the second Sunday in the month of May. This year, it falls on May 12th. Mother’s Day was first started by Anna Jarvin of West Virginia, United States as a memorial for her mother. The first Day to be celebrated was in 1908. Gradually, it became a tradition that spread across the country.

Mother’s Day is meant to celebrate and honour mothers and motherhood. It also honours maternal bonds and the role and influence of mothers in society. In the United Kingdom and other places, a Christian holiday called Mothering Sunday is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

In Indian culture, as it is, mothers and motherhood are held in high esteem. Following the American holiday has brought about a lot of criticism towards the attitude of the ‘urban’ people and also corporates who make the occasion very commercialized.
