After three long years, the restoration of Ambattur Lake eco-park is completed now. This was brought out by the Water Resources Department or WRD. It has been mentioned that restoration works were completed in March but WRD has been waiting for the lockdown (to contain the spread of Coronavirus) to end for opening the park.
It is known that this Ambattur Lake is spread on 400 acres and the total cost for the restoration project was Rs 13.9 crores. Before de-silting, the department had cleaned garbage and water hyacinth from the water body plus had removed more than 100 encroachments from near the lake.
According to a senior official from WRD, the restoration work began 3 years back and it was funded by the Environment and the Forest Department. In 3 phases, the works were completed. He explained that in spite of completing in March the Ambattur Lake eco-park was not opened for the public as it would attract huge crowds in the lockdown period.
The department of WRD had fixed outdoor fitness equipment and walking tracks had been created. A fence was constructed here to stop garbage dumping and sapling was planted. The lake would be maintained by the corporation.
The lake was filled with garbage and polluted with sewage from the residential area but after the restoration the quality improved. It must be noted that the storm water drains have been connected to the waster body so that the rain water flows into the lake. Information collected is the public was not happy with this initiative as there won’t be any increase in the storage capacity.
It was later pointed out by a resident of Ambattur that there were many parks in the locality and the WRD could have installed these outdoor gyms and play areas in these parks instead of Ambattur Lake.
