The GCC has floated tenders for creating public space with a leisure cycle track and to provide landscape along the banks of Buckingham canal. To boost the non-motorised transport or NMT in the Chennai city, GCC has proposed protect under ‘urban space’ project.
It was highlighted by an officer belonging to Chennai Corporation that under the project walkway and cycle tracks would be created along the Buckingham canal from Kasturibai MRTS station in Madhya Kailash junction to Tiruvanmiyur MRTS Junction near Tidel Park signal.
For the sake of making way for the new avenue trees, GCC would remove unwanted vegetation along the banks. This project would be for the stretch of 2.2kms. Implementation of this project would be carried out in 2 phases and GCC has floated 2 tenders one for Kasturibai MRTS station to Indiranagar MRTS and other for Indiranagar MRTS to Tiruvanmiyur MRTS.
Under TURIP or Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Project, the upcoming project would be implemented at a cost of Rs 18 crores.
A Detailed Project Report or DPR has been prepared by the Chennai Corporation just a few months ago and it has been sent for approval from the TN government. Later, tenders were floated after getting the approval from the government. Finalisation of the tenders would be done in the first week of July 2020. A no-objection certificate or NOC was obtained by the civic body from PWD.
