The low pressure near Bay of Bengal has turned into depression and started moving towards the coast of AP. As a result of this, Chennai city would have cloudy days and rainy nights.
Information collected is that the depression is expected to cross the coast between Visakhapatnam and Narsapur on Monday night. The sky condition is likely to be cloudy and thunderstorms with light to moderate rains are likely to occur in some places. This was according to the prediction made by the meteorological department.
In the next 24 hours, the depression is likely to intensify to deep depression. The southern suburbs received rains from Saturday night till Sunday morning.
Places like Chengalpet, Thiruporur, Tiruttani, Kelambakkam etc received 2cms rains and Sriperumbudur, Padur and Tiruvallur received 1cm rains. There was just light rain in places like Numgambakkam in Chennai.
In Chennai on Sunday, the day temperature was brought down slightly by the rains and cloudy skies. The maximum temperature recorded in Nungambakkam was 32.5 degrees Celsius and it was a decrease of 0.2 Celsius. Another important place Meenambakkam recorded 32.4 degrees Celsius and it was a decrease of 0.6 Celsius.
Point is that the depression has resulted in the upper air circulation and convective action and rains would be there as long as the system remains over the sea in Chennai. The meteorological department has mentioned that the suburbs would have dry spells once it enters the land.
On 14th October, a fresh low pressure would develop over north Andaman and the dry spell would not last long and there would be rains. It is now said that in the coming weeks this system would be triggering more light pre-monsoon rains on some of the days. On Sunday night, the depression had triggered thunderstorms over the entire expanse of Bay of Bengal. This was shown by weather tracking sites.
