It is well known that 40percent of wireman and field assistant posts are remaining vacant in Tangedco. At this point of time, Tangedco has decided to employ contract workers for ensuring uninterrupted power supply and for the maintenance. Tangedco was founded in the year 20101 and is owned by the TN government.

For a period of 3 years, the utility has approved carrying out day-to-day maintenance through the work contract systems in the subdivisions of the distribution circles. This was according to the proceedings approved by the chairman and MD of Tangedco. This was on 16th December.

Information is that Tangedco has been outsourcing maintenance activities by using contract workers at various wings. This included day-to-day operations and maintenance of substations, overhead high tension cables and even small hydro stations etc. Tangedco has got as many as51193 vacant posts out of sanctioned strength of 135,470. This was as per the staff strength as on 31st march 2020. It is worth mentioning here that in the RWE category (Field assistants and wiremen etc wiremen etc) 31128 out of a total of 89803 posts are vacant.

There would not be any delay in attending the consumer complaints by employing the contract workers. This has been mentioned by a senior official belonging to Tangedco. He was of the view that there would be delay in attending complaints due to the huge vacancies in the wiremen and in the field assistant category and by using contract workers the man power shortage would not be there.

A minimum of 20 labourers must be deployed by the contractor and the bills would be paid based on works in the unit rate basis. This was mentioned in the latest order. An amount of Rs 5 lakhs would be paid by the contractor to the legal dependent if the contract worker met with any fatal accident. .

There were some complaints from the trade union leaders about engaging contract workers because it would deny permanent job opportunities to the youths. The trade union leaders were of the view that Tangedco was only interested in cutting down the salary cost but not interested in providing jobs to the educated youths.
