By February 2021, the work to connect Thoraipakkam- Pallavaram radial road with ECR would begin. An amount of Rs 204 crores would be spent for this purpose. It is believed that this project of linking ECR-OMR would reduce the traffic on the Rajiv Gandhi Salai or OMR by diverting the traffic.

Constructing 750m stretch:
A 750 m long stretch would be constructed in the first phase by the Highways Department. This stretch would take off from OMR and would end near the canal bank road running along the Buckingham Canal. It is known that this canal is parallel to both ECR as well as OMR.

It was mentioned by an official belonging to the Highways Department that the canal bank road would be widened into 2 lanes and connectivity would be provided to the existing bridges across the canal.

Information gathered is that the tenders have been floated for this Rs 15 crores work. It must be noted that the total cost of this project would be Rs 204 crores. An amount of Rs 189 crores alone would be spent for acquisition of lands. For the purpose of removing the encroachments along the canal, the Highways Department has written to the PWD. This link road would be of 1.5km and the design for the road is being finalised now.

This plan to link OMR and ECR has been appreciated by many residents now. It was brought out by a resident belonging to Kandanchavadi that it was a welcome move. He explained about the absence of proper link between the 2 roads between Thiruvanmiyur and Sholinganallur junctions. He concluded that this 6 lane project would be superb as it would reduce the traffic jams on the road. It is now said that more such roads should be created to help in the emergency cases.
