Chennais water supply to be increased by check dams

Ambitious programme of the WRD!!

In future, more storage structures would come up across the rivers both upstream and downstream of Poondi reservoir. This would be because of the WRD or water resources department’s plan of augmenting Chennai city’s drinking water supply.

It must be noted that the shutters of Poondi reservoir were opened for nearly a month of time since 27th November last year due to heavy inflow from and also due to the steady supply of Krishna water from AP. At that time, 6.6mcft of water was discharged through floodgates. Through the diversion to Sholavaram Lake and check dams and rest was drained into the sea. To retain flow in the rivers, storage structures are being planned.

At a cost of Rs 17.6crores, work to construct a check dam at illuppur about 10km up[stream of Poondi reservoir began on Saturday. In about a year of time, the 230m long check dam would come up across Nagari River near Tiruttani. From the state of AP, Nagari River originates and it traverses 69km in the Tiruvallur district and then enters Poondi Reservoir. Truth is that from there it flows as Kosasthalaiyar.

It has been brought to light by some officers belonging to WRD that the 2m tall check dam would help to store 70mcft water and recharge groundwater in a 3km radius and it would also irrigate 296 hectares of lands in the region. It is now said that WRD has been waiting for the permission for proposal of building 2 more dams at Sangeethakuppam and Kumar Rajapet across Kusa River in Pallipattu taluk. It is known that Lava and Kusa are tributaries of Nagari that originates in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

It is learnt that similar proposals have been chalked out to construct barrages upstream and downstream of the Poondi reservoir.
