The Flyover at Medavakkam in Chennai is making news now!!

After a delay of 2 years, one arm of Chennai’s longest flyover at Medavakkam was opened for the public on Tuesday. This led to less traffic congestion and commutes got easier for the motorists.

It is important to mention here that the 3-lane arm would decongest Sholinganallur and Mambakkam road junctions on the highway. This 3-lane arm was constructed at a cost of Rs 51.5 crores and is of a length of 1.1km. There would be 2 arms present in the flyover and they would be 11m wide from each other. Vehicular movement in the opposite direction would be supported by other arm and this arm would be of 2.35km long and it would help the motorists to skip Madipakkam road junction.

The shortage of space for traffic diversion and land acquisition issues has led to the delay in the construction of the second arm. This was mentioned by a senior officer belonging to the state Highways Department. He later explained about how the traffic police personnel could not find an alternative route and how the reopening of one arm of the flyover would be highly beneficial.

It is now brought out that the work on the second arm of the flyover would be completed in another 3 months of time. Point is that work is pending at 5 of 80 bridge decks and service roads. There were some complaints from the residents of Medavakkam regarding the poor road maintenance and also about the dust pollution.
