The heat has increased now in Chennai, in certain north and interior parts belonging to Tamil Nadu!!

The daily lives of the people have become very difficult in the scorching high temperatures. The meteorological department has predicted that the temperatures might reduce particularly in the north coastal regions from 4th April onwards.

Even before noon, many weather stations in and around Chennai and in the interior districts such as Dharmapuri, Karur etc breached 40 degrees Celsius mark. This took many by surprise yesterday. The mercury level climbed several notches above the normal in Nungambakkam in Chennai and it recorded its highest temperature in 2021.

A high temperature of 41.2 degrees Celsius was recorded in Chennai yesterday and that was 7.4 degrees above the normal and it is just the first week in the month of April. Many suburban places like Meenambakkam, West Tambaram recorded 41.8 degrees Celsius and other places like Madhavaram and Tiruvallur recorded 41.1 degrees Celsius and 41 degrees Celsius respectively.

The highest temperature in TN was recorded at Vellore and it was 43.4 degrees Celsius. Temperatures above 42 degrees Celsius were recorded in places like Salem, Trichy, Madurai, Tiruttani etc. Till Sunday, the heat wave conditions would be there in 27 districts belonging to TN and Puducherry and from 4th April the number of districts that would experience blistering heat might reduce. This was mentioned by the meteorological department.

It is now said that light rains with thunderstorms would be possible in isolated pockets of the interior districts following connectivity activity till 6th of April. It is surprising to mention that yesterday few places like Kamakshipuram of Dindigul district experienced rains.

Such prolonged heat waves have not occurred in the recent past where the day temperatures were 7 degrees Celsius above the normal. This was according to Mr. S. Balachandran deputy director general of meteorology. This intense heat in TN in April month has been due to various factors like dry, hot land winds, clear skies, moisture less conditions and direct sunshine etc.

There would be a change in the wind direction to cool easterlies and this would lead to a decreasing trend of heat after Sunday. North coastal places would have a gradual decrease in the day temperatures. The officers are also of the view that the weather system near Andaman Islands had disturbed the wind pattern and prevented easterly winds to the region. This was also responsible for the excessive heat it is now said that the weather system could become a deep depression and move towards the Myanmar coast and the direction of wind could change in TN. There would be some respite from the scorching heat. Till Sunday in Chennai, the maximum temperatures could be around 40 degrees Celsius.
