Thiruvannamalai District Collector: Please Do Not Undertake Girivalam!

The Collector of Thiruvannamalai District, Sandeep Nadurai has appealed to the DEVOTEES NOT TO UNDERTAKE GIRIVALAM on 26th and 27th April when the full moon (Pournami) day occurs!

He has notified that the devotees MUST extend full cooperation the government’s efforts to check and prevent the fast and wide-spreading resurgent coronavirus pandemic!

It is traditional and considered a highly sacred routine for thousands of  devotees to undertake ‘girivalam’ on the monthly-once occurring Full-Moon days (Pouyrnami or Poornima) – undertaking a ‘Prakashan around-walking-trip along the bottom of the Thiruvannamalai mopuntain.

Especially on the Full Moon Day occurring in the Tamil Calendar month of Chithirai, known as ‘Chithra Pournami’, tens of lakhs of devotees from the other districts of the State of Tamil Nadu as well as devotees from other states across the country to undertake the above-mentioned ‘girivalam’!

 This year (2021), Chithra Pournami commences at 2.16 PM on Monday, 26th April and concludes at 9.59 AM, the next day, 27th April, Tuesday.

Given the above state affairs, as a preventive measure against the raging resurgent coronavirus pandemic in the state, the District Collector of Thiruvannamalai, Sandeep Nanduri has ordered A BAN ON UNDERTAKING GIRIVALAM ON CHITHRA POURNAMI DAY this year!

In a notification released regarding this, he has mentioned the devotees and the public need not undertake a visit to Thiruvannamalai on this occasion and has appealed to them to extend full-cooperation to the government’s measure to check/prevent the spread of the raging resurgent coronavirus pandemic!
