NIT cut off marks wrought with confusion

Arriving at the cut off marks for admissions into the National Institutes of Technology (NIT) is complicated. The Institute has brought about a new system of calculation that will take into account the JEE Main scores (60 per cent weightage) and the Std. XII marks (40 per cent weightage). However, the 40 per cent of Std. XII marks is further categorized into 20 per cent of the normalized score of the board and 20 per cent of JEE Main scores of the particular board’s students. Confused?

‘A committee comprising experts from the Indian Statistical Institute, CBSE and IIT-Kanpur, among others, was formed to normalise the class XII board results and the formula was arrived at after great effort’, said an official of NIT Rourkela.
