One of the major water bodies, Poondi reservoir has been supplying water to the Chennai city residents is a well known fact.

To improve the storage in this Poondi reservoir, the Krishna water would be released around mid June. This was mentioned by the WRD or Water Resources Department.

It is learnt that to augment resources WRD has written a letter to its counterparts in AP to discharge water from the Kandaleru reservoir. According to some officials belonging to WRD, the 5 reservoirs including Thervoy Kandigai- Kannankottai in Tiruvallur district had a combined storage of 6985 million cubic feet of water that was 59.45 of its capacity.

From Poondi reservoir much of the water has been transferred to Red Hills and Chembarambakkam reservoirs and due to that the storage levels in the Poondi reservoir has been reduced to 11% of its capacity. It was later brought to light by an officer that to step up the storage in Poondi reservoir and to sustain daily water supply in Chennai Krishna Water supply has been sought out. He explained that the authorities in AP have agreed to release additional water in the Kandaleru-Poondi canal around 15th June 2021.Point is that already 1600 cusecs of water is being released for drinking, irrigation purposes of areas en route in their state. It is worthy to note that the Kandaleru reservoir has got sufficient storage of about 44000 mcft.

If the KP canal entry point in Uthukottai receives 500 cusecs for a fortnight, WRD is expecting to increase the storage in the Poondi reservoir by about 500mcft. From May month in 2020, the Chennai city had received nearly 8158 mcft share of Krishna water and in April 201 water release was stopped. For managing the resources and to maintain adequate water supply, Krishna water discharge would be beneficial. Information collected is that Chennai receives 844.54 mld of water.

Point is that of the 844.54 mld domestic water supply accounts to 815.77 mld as of Monday, 7th June. In June 2020, Chennai city’s total water supply was 700 mld is known.

The ongoing repair work in KP Canal might help in reducing the water loss and this was according to some officials belonging to WRD. In the vulnerable stretches between Uthukottai and Poondi, around 40percent of work has been completed. In the normal scenario, Chennai would have 15% water loss when the water reaches Poondi. The officials have hinted that the water loss might get reduced by 10 to 11percent.
