Reports of Nayanthara’s ‘Netrikann’ and Vijay Sethupathi’s ‘Thuglaq Darbar’ to skip theatre releases seem to have come true. The two eagerly awaited movies will release directly on OTT.
‘Netrikann’ produced by Vignesh Shivan and directed by Milind Rau, will be released on Disney+ Hotstar. Officially announced by the channel themselves, Disney+Hotstar will premiere the movie. The date is not yet announced but the streaming platform is looking at an August release, which is what the reports claim.
On the other hand, Vijay Sethupathi’s ‘Thuglaq Darbar’ will be released on Netflix and also have a television premiere on Sun TV on the occasion of Vinayaka Chathurthi, i.e., September 19th 2021. A political satire, the movie is directed by debutant Delhi Prasad Deenadayalan. The movie also has Parthiepan in an important role. The producer of the movie Lalit Kumar has opted for a digital release as the buzz of theatres opening is not happening anytime soon. Most small and medium budget producers are looking at this option to reduce their losses and if lucky even make some profit.
On the other side, theatres are counting on releases from bankable stars to get the audiences back to the screens whenever they open.
