Lord Ambikai (Goddess Parvath/Durgai/Amman)
As per the centuries-old tradition, the Tamil Calendar month of Aadi is special for the Goddess Ambikai or Amman, especially in the State of Tamil Nadu! It is so special that all the Amman temples in the State celebrate this occasion with extreme devotion and enthusiasm! The Aadi month festivals in Amman temples are celebrated in a grand manner. Aadi Thapas - Aadi Pournami (Full Moon Day)
Goddess Gomathi Amman of Sankarankovil performed penance (‘Thavam’ in Tamil) in Punnai forest. The penance undertaken was to to make the world aware that there is only one supreme God – as such, Lord Sankaranarayanan (Lord Siva) appeared before the Goddess – this day is celebrated as Aadi Thapas. It is a traditional belief from our ancestors’ days that worshipping Goddess Amman on the Full Moon Day (Pournami or Poornima) in the Tamil calendar month of Aadi will be extremely beneficial for the devotees!
Aadipperukku - 3rd August
The 18th day of the Tamil calendar month of Aadi is celebrated as ‘Pathinettam Perukku’. This is considered an extremely auspicious day as whatever good work is started will be achieved/completed smoothly without any hitch! The newly-wed couple present a gift pack of betel leaves, Turmeric, vermillion, and sacred thread for the married women (thali in Tamil) and bangles to married women.They also perform traditional poojas on the banks of water-bodies such as rivers and ponds and perform special poojas and prayers seeking a long life for their husbands!
Aadi New Moon Day (Amavasai) - 8th August
Traditionally, the new Moon Day or Amavasai when the moon does not appear is considered a sacred day for paying respects to ancestors. Out of all New Moon days, the New Moon Day occurring in the Tamil Calendar month of Aadi is considered the most important! It is an ages-old traditional faith that when a special rite called ‘Tarpan’ (Tharppanam) is performed by way of paying respects to the departed ancestors on this day,
Aadi Pooram
The day on which the Star ‘Pooram’ occurs in the month of Aadi is celebrated as ‘Aadi Pooram’. It is the day on which one of the 12 respected saints of Lord Vishnu (known as 12 Alwars), Andal, was born. She was devoted to Lord Ranganatha and married him! On the day of Aadi Pooram functions known as ‘valaikappu’ (a celebration performed for the pregnant woman after marriage) is performed on the Deities of Goddess Amman and the items offered on this ceremony to Goddess Amman is distributed to the married woman, there would be strong prospects for them to bear children!
