Seventy Thousand Engineering Seats May Go Unfilled This Year

So far sixty thousand engineering seats have been filled. Within 21 days even if 50 thousands seats are filled, it is expected that another 70 thousands seats will go unfilled. There are 560 engineering colleges throughout Tamil Nadu. In this there are Government Engineering colleges, State Aided Engineering colleges and private self funding colleges. Two Lakhs seats are allotted under Government quota in these colleges. In order to fill these seats, counselling had begun on 17th of last month.

General counselling wherein all the students can participate has begun in Anna University from 21st of last month. AICTE has ordered that all the First year BE courses should commence on 1st of August and because of this counselling is going on in top gear. Major Government seats have been filled.  

Details of the seats filled in the categories are as follows:

General: 27,454

BC: 15,547

MBC: 10,230

SC: 4014

ST: 113

Vacant seats available: 1.38 Lakhs

There are 25,672 vacant seats in the SC category and 1,826 vacant seats in the ST category. 1.36 Lakhs seats are lying vacant in private colleges. The last date for filling all these seats is 31st of this month.

It is anticipated that 40 to 50 thousands seats may be filled and 80 thousands seats will be lying vacant.

Even last year, 50 thousands seats were  not filled.
