Shocking!! Water discharged from Poondi reservoir even before the onset of NE monsoon!!

Posted on: 12/Oct/2021 9:26:09 AM
Poondi reservoir received inflow from the upstream waterways for the second consecutive day and due to this reason water release has been doubled now from this reservoir. This was as per WRD or water resources department.

It is now revealed that this is the first time ever in a decade that water has been discharged from Poondi reservoir even before the onset of NE monsoon. Previously, it was in 1996 and then in 2011 water was discharged even before the onset of monsoons. This was mentioned by WRD.

As per an officer belonging to WRD it was clear that WRD had to step up outflow to nearly 2000 cubic feet per second. He added that the Poondi reservoir received water flow from one of the arms of Nagari River through Pallipet. Point is that water from Ammapalli dam in AP and catchment areas flowed through Nagari River. He concluded that the surplus water of 2 tanks up streams also flowed into Poondi reservoir through Nandi River.

Information gathered is that on Monday Poondi reservoir had 2840 mc ft water that was 88% of its capacity. It is now said that WRD would maintain the water level below 34feet against the full level of 35feet this month as more inflow is expected in the upcoming NE monsoon season.

Another WRD official spoke about how the water released into Kosasthalaiyar River would take 4 to 5 days before draining into the sea. Before water reaches the sea, water discharged into the river would be stored in 12 check dams downstream of Poondi reservoir. He pointed out that a minimum of 500 mcft would be saved in these check dams. Later on, water would be transferred to Sholavaram reservoirs through Tamaraipakkam anaicut with regulator arrangements. It is learnt that well fields along the course would be recharged and another 500 mcft of water would be harnessed through groundwater recharge.
