The traffic at the Koyambedu- Maduravoyal stretch on the Poonamallee High Road is always heavy. The motorists using this stretch have been finding it tough due to the presence of a concrete abutment structure in the middle of the arterial road. This has been leading to many accidents here.
The latest news is that NHAI or National Highways Authority of India has decided to demolish this concrete structure. It was more than a decade back this abutment concrete structure was constructed by NHAI as a part of Chennai Port to Maduravoyal Elevated Road project. Truth is that the project got shelved after the TN government stopped the works along the Cooum River citing obstruction to the water flow.
The concrete structure that was constructed in the middle of the road became a bottleneck leading to many accidents and affected the traffic flow here.
According to an officer belonging to NHAI as a part of short term black spot rectification works NHAI would be demolishing the abutment concrete structure. He added that the concrete structure was no longer required due to changes in the Port-Maduravoyal project alignment. It is learnt that in the new plan the elevated road would come along the Cooum even beyond Koyambedu and the abutment was no longer needed. It must be remembered that in March 2021 NHAI tried to remove the concrete structure but it was unsuccessful. Special methods would be used to remove the concrete structure and for this NHAI would be giving the contract.
For the new alignment of Port-Maduravoyal double decker project, a memorandum of understanding or MoU would be signed. This was as per some sources. Getting the approval from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is essential. For making changes in the alignment and for inclusion of 13 entry and exit ramps, the stakeholders such as NHAI, Indian Navy, CPT and TN government have agreed.
