In future, don’t get surprised if you come across modern type toilets with Wi-Fi facilities plus potable water supply and ATM’s across Chennai city!!
It is now said that the GCC would be building these for the sake of the public at 62 places in Chennai. This would be carried out under Singara Chennai 2.0 initiative. In the last week of October, the civic body has invited EIA or Expression of Interest from the bidders. Public-private partnership method would be used to build, operate and maintain public toilets.
It was brought to light by some sources that these smart toilets would have facilities including Wi-Fi, potable water, ATMs nearby, sanitary pad vending machines, solar photovoltaic rooftop panels and commercial spaces for advertising purposes etc.
It was mentioned by a senior officer belonging to Chennai Corporation that there are 800 normal toilets with 7300 seats available in Chennai. He hinted about the importance of self sustainable and alternative public toilet models that could be set up across Chennai in an eco-friendly manner. It is worthy to note that these toilets would be women, child and differently able friendly and would have uninterrupted water supply.
The toilets would also have other features such as automated flush, LED indicators to notify the users about the status of occupancy plus display boards in various languages like Tamil, English and Hindi. Sufficient work force has to be provided to maintain these smart toilets and the contractors taking up the project have been asked to provide the workforce. It must not be forgotten that these types of modern toilets were set up in the previous government also but they failed to take off. Most of these toilets are not functioning now. Now, a commercial display space would be provided for addressing the drawbacks. It is expected that real estate companies or corporate entities would be making use of this space.
