In another 3 months of time, the work on Elephant Gate Bridge in Chennai would be completed and this was according to Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC. For the speedy completion, the officers belonging to GCC must associate with the Railways and this was revealed by the Chennai Mayor R. Priya. The work on the 156.12m long bridge would get over fast with this coordination only.

The safety issues have led to the slow progressing of the work here. To reduce the accidents risk, the work on the Elephant Gate Bridge was carried out only during the night time. In the year 1933, the bridge was constructed and is now located in the ward 57 belonging to the Royapuram zone. The structure became weak and it was demolished 3 years back.

At an estimated cost of Rs 30.78 crores, the new bridge is being built and it is expected to reduce the traffic congestion in north Chennai. Information gathered is that this bridge is coming up between Central railway station and Basin bridge railway station. After the bridge gets ready for use, then it would reduce the traffic congestion and would ease the traffic flow from Wall Tax Road and Raja Muthiah Road.

It is learnt that after the demolition of the old bridge the new structure would be longer at 156.12ma across the railway line. Two ramps of length 364.23m would be constructed by GCC. It is worth mentioning here that the ramp towards Wall Tax Road would be 165.24 m and that towards Raja Muthiah Road would be 198.99m.
