Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority or CUMTA has identified 19 metro stations in Chennai that would be built under the second phase for development into multi modal transport hubs. By this, the residents of Chennai would be able to seamlessly commute in the future. It is worthy to note that the 118.9km 3-corridor phase-2 network would have 128 stations. Few stations have been taken up for multi modal integration under each of the corridors.
Point is that the stations include Thiruvanmiyur that has a MRTS in the vicinity, Mandaveli where the commuters would be able to access MRTS or bus terminus, Madhavaram where the bus depot is now the only transport mode.
According to Mr. Jeyakumar, special officer from CUMTA it was confirmed that the plan was to integrate MTC, CMRL and MRTS. To fine tune the plan, a team from CUMTA and a team from CMRL would associate soon. More people would use the public modes of transport like MTC buses, MRTS and metro trains etc in Chennai as bus stops would be brought nearer to the metro station. By this, the walking distance would be reduced.
At the first committee meeting on MMI or multi modal integration that was organised by CUMTA, the decision to link 19 metro stations to other modes of transport was taken. Mr. Anshul Mishra, chairman, CMDA was also present at the meeting. It is now said that the upcoming integration would consider various lessons that were learnt from multi-modal links at the existing metro stations in the city.
In Chennai, there are several metro stations that do not offer an easy way for the commuters to switch from one mode to another transport mode. It is true that the commuters find it difficult to reach the bus stand in Guindy. In the popular Anna Salai, the last mile connectivity needs to be improved.
