Presently under the jurisdiction of 20 local bodies, 423 roads would be widened by the CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority. The main objective behind this would be to ensure last mile connectivity.

It was later mentioned by some sources that 423 roads have been identified and feasibility study would be carried out for taking up the roads for widening. Under the section 17(2) of TN Town and Country Planning Act 1971, CMDA has proposed to carry out street alignment within CMA limits and make a variation to the second master plan. This was mentioned in the notification issued by CMDA.

The notification added that the street alignment shall be half width of the right of way measured on either side of the central line of the roads present in cases where particular street alignment has not been shown in the second master plan. It is learnt that in cases where railway line abuts on one side then widening proposed would be done on the right side.

It was later pointed out by former urban engineering professor of Anna University K.P. Subramaniam that  section 17(2) doesn`t give power to anyone. He added that the roads to be taken up for widening or street alignment must be included in the master plan. Hundred roads have found a place in the second master plan and in these roads street alignment would be carried out. It must be noted that proper studies must be done before carrying out widening of the roads.

Necessary changes must be made in the master plan by following all processes and then approval from the government must be obtained. While carrying out widenoing or street alignment work some lands would be affected and the officers must work out on the compensation package. This was according to Mr. Krishna Kumar, CMDA chief planner.
