It Seems that there would be some delay in the opening of the Kilambakkam bus terminus for the public!!
It is known that a third bus terminus is being constructed at Kilambakkam in Chennai. Now, CMDA or Chennai metropolitan development authority has postponed the opening of this new bus terminus on or before the Tamil New Year on 14th of April 2023.
It was earlier said that the new bus terminus construction works would get over before the Pongal festival but it would not be possible now. This was explained by Mr. Sekhar Babu, minister for transport.
The dome structure over the bus terminus is not yet completed and this was mentioned by an officer from CMDA. He added that other works have been completed but dome structure would be the major attraction at the bus terminus. The works related to the dome structure must be carried out carefully or else it might collapse. He concluded that the CMDA has been trying to complete all the works before 14th April and operate the buses from that special day.
It was in 2017 that the ambitious project of CMDA was first mooted. It must be recalled that the project work experienced several issues as the project area fell close to an archaeological relevant site. Truth is that getting clearance from the ASI or Archeological Survey of India took a long time. There were also some issues regarding land acquisition and frequent modification of DPR. The construction work started in 2019 and it was expected to be completed in 24 months. The Coronavirus pandemic affected the construction works.
The govt buses as well as omni buses would be plying from Kilambakkam bus terminus to southern districts once the construction works get completed at the new bus terminus. At present, from the Koyambedu bus terminus these buses have been going to the southern districts in TN. There would also be MTC buses operating from the new bus terminus and it would have links with the suburban stations and metro trains also. A climate park and archaeological park would be created by the CMDA near the Kilambakkam bus terminus.
As per an official, vegetation would be planted in the proposed park as the land belongs to ASI and passengers could make use of the parks while they wait for the buses. For operating buses to several western districts in TN, CMDA has been constructing a new bus terminus at Thirumazhisai also now.
