The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) has collected Rs. 4.2 crore in fines for drunk driving violations in the past five weeks. However, a total of 7,335 cases of drunk driving are still pending in the city, according to police sources. As part of a special drive since January 22, violators were contacted through police call centers and asked to pay up the fine.
The GCTP has warned that warrants will be obtained from courts to attach the vehicles of those caught for drunk driving and have not paid the fine amount. In fact, 347 warrants have already been issued for the attachment of property in lieu of the fine amount. Police have emphasized that not only the involved vehicle, but other vehicles belonging to the vehicle owner will also be attached.
Despite the Rs. 10,000 fine, many violators have yet to pay up. The GCTP has vowed to continue its special drive to dispose of drunk driving cases through call centers in the future as well. It has also urged citizens to act responsibly and avoid drunk driving to prevent fatal accidents on the road.
