The greenery in the Chennai city would become more soon with the bio-earth derived after mining solid waste to be used. It is known that the TN government has been taking efforts now to increase the Chennai greenery.
It is learnt that Anna University or AU has come up with the bio amendment from bio mining soil and it has joined hands with more than 250 local bodies in TN that includes GCC, 150 town panchayats and 70 municipalities. Thirty five percent of bio-earth would be obtained by processing one tonne of legacy waste.
Truth is that the waste now is getting dumped along the rivers etc and this could be dangerous when used without processing as there are chances of presence of some heavy metals etc. At 69 locations, biomining has been completed till now. Information is that 32lakhs cubic metres of legacy waste has been cleared and 360 acres of land reclaimed
For all the bio-mining sites in TN( Kodungaiyur and Perungudi landfills etc), AU is the project management consultant. It must be noted that AU has held meetings with top officials and it would work with the agricultural dept.
It was later brought out by the principal secretary, municipal administration and water supply dept, Mr. Shiva Das Meena that NHAI had used bio-earth for road laying in New Delhi. He added that the Highways dept must use that in the state of Tamil Nadu also. He concluded that the forest dept have been requested to use bio-earth for plantation in the degraded forests.
