On Wednesday, 17th May, the sea breeze brought down the temperatures below 40 degree Celius in Chennai. This brought huge relief for the residents. Numgambakkam recorded 37 degrees and Meenambakkam recorded 39.4 degrees. The humidity levels touched a high of 70% and it appeared as if the temperature was 46 degrees Celius in the city. The early arrival of sea bresse, change in the wind direction and trough over mainland etc has resulted in the drop in the temperatures in Chennai on Wednesday. This was mentioned by Mr.N. Senthamarai Kannan, director regional weather forecasting centre, IMD, Chennai. He added that two degrees above the normal was recorded in few stations in TN and that was only normal in the May Month. The delay in the onset of sea breeze by a couple of hours could result in a rise in the temp by 2 to 2.5 degrees.
The cyclone Mocha has changed the direction of the winds and there was no support mechanism for convective activity. This was responsible for temperatures above 40 degrees Celius for 3 consecutive days in Chennai from 14th May to 16th May 2023. As per some meteorologists, the rains in TN would be mostly restricted near the western Ghats.
