The ambitious project, initiated in February 2019, aimed to alleviate traffic congestion within Chennai city. Valued at an impressive Rs. 400 crores and spanning across 88 acres of land, this state-of-the-art bus stand was originally slated for a 2022 unveiling after a projected two-year construction period. However, due to the unforeseen challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, the completion timeline encountered delays.
Presently, construction efforts have regained momentum, progressing swiftly towards fruition. The meticulously designed bus station is primed to accommodate a staggering capacity of 2,000 buses, along with dedicated spaces for 270 cars and 3,500 two-wheelers. Of notable significance is the provision of an exclusive section designated for city buses, facilitating seamless transit connections for commuters from various corners of Chennai.
Remarkably, the Kilambakkam Bus Stand stands at an impressive 99 percent completion rate, promising imminent operation. Officials are poised to announce the official opening date, sparking enthusiasm within the South District`s populace.
