On Thursday night, the Chennai residents were surprised by the sudden downpour and many localities in the city received 1cm to 7cm of rain. It has been confirmed that since 1st of June 2023 Chennai had received 397.3 mm rains in total and that is 58% more than the normal.
With less intensity, there would be rains in Chennai for another 48 hours and this was mentioned by some weathermen. The reason for the rains is because of convection caused by heat absorbed by the land during the day. Another factor that was responsible for the rains was the arrival of westerlies and seabreeze. By the end of August month, the next round of rains might arrive and this was as per some weather bloggers.
While it has been raining every other day in Chennai in August, many parts belonging to TN are recording a dry spell. This was according to meteorologists. There are now 7 districts in TN that have been facing a dry spell now and this was brought out by IMD. Information gathered is that TN has recorded a near normal rainfall of 165.5mmand that is 1% deficit than the previous years. Yesterday, few places belonging to north Chennai and places surrounding OMR received rains in short spells.
There would be light to moderate rains with lightning and thunderstorms in some places during evening or night for the next 24 hours and this was as per IMD. The maximum temperature would be around 36 degrees to 37 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature would be 26 degrees Celsius.
