The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) has issued traffic diversions in and around Besant Nagar in preparation for the `Annai Velankanni Shrine Golden Jubilee-2023` festival, set to commence on August 29 with a ceremonial flag hoisting. This festival is scheduled to run until September 8, and the GCTP has outlined a comprehensive traffic plan to ensure smooth flow during these festivities.
August 29 - Flag Hoisting and Car Procession:
On August 29, at 4:30 am, the flag hoisting ceremony will take place at the Annai Velankanni Shrine. Following the ceremony, a car procession will begin from the church and follow this route: 6th Avenue Beach Road - 3rd Main Road - 2nd Avenue - 7th Avenue.
September 1 - Youth Procession:
On September 1, starting at 4:30 pm, a youth procession will depart from the church and proceed via 6th Avenue.
September 2 - Car Procession:
On September 2, at 7:30 pm, another car procession will start from the church and return via 6th Avenue Beach Road.
September 3 - Car Procession:
On September 3, the car procession will commence from the church and circle back to the church through the following route: 6th Avenue Beach Road - 3rd Main Road - 2nd Avenue - 7th Avenue.
September 7 - Grand Car Procession:
The grand car procession is scheduled for September 7, starting at 7:30 pm. It will begin at the church and return to the church via this route: 6th Avenue Beach Road - 4th Main Road - 2nd Avenue - 3rd Avenue - 7th Avenue.
During these festival days, incoming vehicles from Thiru.Vi.ka Bridge will be permitted to proceed as usual. However, in the event of heavy crowds and traffic congestion, vehicles headed towards 3rd Avenue and 2nd Avenue will be rerouted at Dr. Muhtulakshmi Park (ML Park), where they will make a left turn onto LB Road and continue via MG Road to reach their destination.
Furthermore, if traffic congestion occurs on MG Road, all vehicles will be diverted through Besant Nagar 1st Main Road - Sastri Nagar Bus Depot - a right turn onto 2nd Avenue to ensure smoother traffic flow.
For the convenience of festival-goers, parking facilities will be available at several locations, including Olcott Memorial Higher Secondary School, Aringar Anna Govt. Higher Secondary School, Besant Nagar 2nd Main Road, Besant Nagar 4th Avenue, and Besant Nagar 17th Cross Street.
