Weather Update: Tamil Nadu Braces for 3 Days of Thunder and Lightning Rain

The Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory indicating that Tamil Nadu is expected to experience thunder and lightning rain over the next three days, starting today.

According to a press release from the Director of the Chennai Meteorological Research Center, P. Chenthamaraikannan, the weather phenomenon is attributed to a deep low-pressure area formed in the North-West Bay of Bengal, along with its adjoining Mid-West Bengal Sea. This low-pressure area is likely to progress towards Odisha and Chhattisgarh regions over the next two days.

Key points from the weather advisory include:

Rain Outlook: 
Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is expected in isolated areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from today for the next three days. A similar weather pattern is anticipated on the 18th, 19th, and 20th of September.

Chennai Forecast: 
Chennai and its suburbs are expected to remain partly cloudy over the next 48 hours. Some areas of the city may experience thunder, lightning, and light to moderate rain. The maximum temperature is projected to be around 95 degrees Fahrenheit, with a minimum temperature of approximately 79 degrees Fahrenheit.

Recent Rainfall: 
In the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on the 14th of September, several regions in Tamil Nadu received significant rainfall, including Erode district`s Perunthurai, Coimbatore`s Chinnakallaru, Namakkal district`s Senthamangalam, Chennai`s Choshinganallur, and Kanchipuram district`s Perumbudur, each receiving 3 to 4 cm of rainfall.

Wind Advisory: 
The weather advisory also cautions about strong winds in specific areas. Central West Bengal and the adjacent South West Bay of Bengal are expected to experience winds of 45 to 55 km per hour, with the possibility of cyclonic winds at speeds of up to 65 km per hour. Additionally, Sri Lankan coastal areas and the adjoining South West Bay of Bengal, South East Bay of Bengal, and Central East Bay of Bengal may experience winds of 40 to 45 km per hour, with intervals of 55 km per hour and the possibility of hurricane winds. Fishermen are advised to exercise caution and avoid venturing into these areas.
