Driving through the Chennai roads would become much easier from now on!!
Many roads and bus routes in Chennai lack visibility. Now, GCC has taken up an important work of reducing or lowering the height of the street lights from 8m to 5m to improve lightning and to prevent damage to the trees etc. It is noteworthy that a large number of trees have been pruned ahead of the monsoon season to remove the foliage blocking the street lights along many stretches.
In Chennai, most of the 471 bus route roads and 35000 streets had trees that needed frequent pruning to improve lighting. Following the demand from the DMK Councillor, T.V. Shemmozhi, at the town planning meeting of the corporation, the GCC this month has reduced the height of the street lights in the Anna Nagar Ward 104 in I Block 42nd Street, Udhayam Colony.
In Chennai, in the important roads like Arya Gowda Road etc, the GCC has started to reduce the height of the street lights. According to an officer from GCC, the height of the street lights in all the interior roads in all the 15 GCC zones Chennai would be reduced to just 5m soon.
The civic body would be able to save power as the street light fittings have been converted from 110 Watts to 90 Watts due to height reduction. The officials from GCC spoke about how the reduction in the height of the street lights has prevented the glare of the lights from affecting driving along the stretches.
