Yesterday, 31st October 2023, the construction of iron pillars to connect Chennai St Thomas Mount - Velachery railway stations began. Currently, MRTS is being operated between Chennai Beach and Velachery.
Now, the works to link St Thomas Mount and Velachery railway stations are being carried out at a cost of R 734.01 cr. All the works are going to get over soon along the 5km route and just 500 m of work is now remaining. It is learnt that at the St Thomas Mount railway station to construct railway tracks at elevated height 6 iron pillars would be erected. Yesterday, the erection of 3 iron pillars took place.
Information is that for erection of 50m long and 3.1m height iron pillars, 100 engineers and 6 giant cranes were involved. Today, the remaining 3 iron pillars would be erected.
It is known to us that Madhavaram- Sholinganallur metro phase-2 would pass through the St Thomas Mount railway station. The railway line for this would be constructed above the Velachery MRTS line at an elevated height. It is now brought out that St Thomas Mount would become a major terminal for the passengers as many would travel through this place through MRTS, suburban trains from Beach to Tambaram and metro trains etc.
