The superb news for the Chennai residents is that beaches present in Chennai and added areas etc would get an eco-friendly facelift. This was mentioned by data that was compiled ahead of the preparation of a vision document for the third master plan 2027 to 2046 for CMA.
On Friday, a sectoral meeting took place for the preparation of the vision document and in the meeting the officials belonging to GCC and other civic agencies took part in group discussions about the issues and challenges regarding ecology, urban growth, environment, natural resources etc.
It is now said that the civic bodies like GCC would coordinate with CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority in beach beautification projects implementation.
The beach beautification project for other beaches in Chennai would start in 2024 after an announcement by Mr. P.K. Sekar Babu, HR and CE minister.
Coastal development plan work:
Information gathered is that work on the preparation of coastal development plans for Ennore, Besant Nagar, Kovalam and Marina have been taken up. For developing world class visitor facilities, government lands near the beaches would be identified.
The civic agencies must take all steps to save the environment plus mitigate the challenges of climate change and not compromise on Chennai city`s productivity. This was according to Mr. Anshul Mishra, member secretary of CMDA. He threw light about how lots of people come here for their livelihoods and how the potential of the urban areas must be understood. He was of the opinion that the damage to the environment must be minimised while urbanising.
Mr. N. Ravi Kumar, chief planner of CMDA mentioned that the authority has started preparation of the Coastline Development Plans to provide world class facilities while preserving the ecosystem. He was of the view that community participation in the planning would be very important in implementing the project without harming the environment.
