On Thursday, 16th November 2023, the High Court mentioned that the post graduate medical students who were on Covid-19 duty in the govt hospitals would also be eligible for the incentive marks for selection to the post of assistant surgeons.
The first bench comprising Chief Justice S.V. Gangapurawala and Justice D. Bharatha Chakravarthy spoke about how the petitioners and similarly situated applicants who performed Covid-19 duty must also be considered as Medical Officers for granting incentive marks.
It must be noted that the services rendered by the PG medical students during Covid 19 pandemic was part of their 36 months training period that was supposed to be practical training towards the subject that they study. These PG medicos were also roped in the related wards for Covid duty at the govt hospitals in TN and that was due to the abnormal situation that arose in the Covid-19 pandemic.
The first bench then explained that the PG medicos put on the same kind of duty and underwent the same rigours as that of other medical officers appointed by TN govt. It concluded that the persons recruited by the TN govt for pandemic duty were categorised as Medical Officers.
