The lack of enough staff and medicines and sometimes even absence of the doctors or nurses at many PHCs or primary health centres in Chennai have been causing problems for the residents now. As a result, the residents are unhappy.
Recently, senior persons belonging to Annai Indira Nagar in Velachery were bitten by stray dogs and were taken to the PHC present in Gandhi Salai. It must be noted that the PHC did not have enough staff plus no anti-rabies injections were available etc.
It was brought out by Mr. S. Kumarajaja, secretary of Annai Indira Nagar Residents Association belonging to Velachery that previously there was a PHC in Velachery with 50 beds but it was shifted to Adyar. He was unhappy about the present PHC as it did not have enough staff and medicines to treat the patients with dog bites and snake bites etc.
It was mentioned by a resident here that in the monsoon season that they have asked the civic authorities to improve the infrastructure at the PHC s as everyone cannot afford private hospitals etc.
Another resident spoke about how the residents were scared to go to the private PHCs that were maintained by the corporation as nurses there prescribe medicines for the patients. There has been n0 doctor for the last 5 months at the newly inaugurated health and wellness centre in Thiruvottiyur.
Pont is that in addition to the lack of staff at many PHCs many staff don`t come on time also. The shocking piece of information is that the residents belonging to Pattaravakkam and Korattur etc travel 3 to 4km to reach PHC to get treated. Truth is that there are not enough staff at this PHC and the residents find it very tough.
