How will you react if you come to know that from January onwards, you will have to spend just a short time only at the traffic signals in Chennai?

With funding from JICA or Japan International Cooperation Agency, the pilot project of ITS or Intelligent Transport Systems would be implemented in January by GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation in Chennai. The locations have been finalised and design has been going on now. This was mentioned by some officials of GCC. Currently, the data collection from all the stakeholders is going on.

On 31st March 2023, the contract was signed with L & T and on 6th June 2023 the contract was approved by JICA. For the ITS implementation project, Rs 530 cr would be spent.

Locations where PIS, adaptive traffic control etc will be present:

It is learnt that PIS would be present in the bus shelters at Park Station towards K.K. Nagar, Shanthi theatre towards K.K. Nagar, LIC towards K.K. Nagar, Udhayam theatre/Ashok pillar towards CMBT and Anand theatre towards K.K. Nagar. The PIS would also be making its presence felt at Sterling Road and Liberty theatre bus stops, Royapetah bus shelters etc. It was mentioned by an officer that the estimated time for arrival of the buses would be available.

At the junction of EVR Periyar Salai and Barnaby Road, the pilot project of adaptive traffic signal control would be implemented. In the same manner, at the junction of EVR Periyar Salai and New Avadi Road (Pachaiappas) junction, another pilot project for red light violation detection system would be implemented. At the Koyambedu flyover near TATA motors, the pilot project of traffic incident detection system would be implemented.

According to an official it was confirmed that the commuters and vehicle users would witness a reduction in the stopping time at the traffic signals in Chennai.

On the stretch of Poonamallee High Road and NSK Nagar in Arumbakkam, automatic traffic counter cum classifier system would be implemented. Along the Anna Salai near Thomos Manro statue,  a speed limit violation detection system would be introduced.

According to an official it was confirmed that the commuters and vehicle users would witness a reduction in the stopping time at the traffic signals in Chennai. He added that from January 2024 onwards implementation for pilot junctions would begin. Point is that firstly trial runs would be carried for about a month and later on project implementation would be carried out in full swing.
