For the last few days, it has been raining on and off in Chennai and its suburbs etc.
There would be heavy rains in 7 districts belonging to the state of Tamil Nadu today. A press release has been issued by Mr. Senthamaraikannan , director, meteorological centre, Chennai.
As per the press release, a low pressure area was expected to form on 26th November in the south Andaman Sea and southeast Bay of Bengal. Now, this might occur on 27th November and would intensify into a deep depression on 29th November. It added that there would be light to moderate rains in some places in TN and Puducherry due to the change in the speed of the easterly winds blowing towards TN.
As a result, there would be chances of heavy rains in 1 or 2 places in the districts of Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagai, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Puddukottai and Ramanathapuram & Karaikal etc today. In the next 48hours, Chennai and its suburbs might experience partially cloudy skies and some places in Chennai might receive moderate rains with thunder and lightning etc.
The release also mentioned that in the last 24 hours that ended on 24th November till 8:30pm Coonoor in the Nilgris dist received a maximum rainfall of 9cms and was followed by 8cms rain in Surangudi, Alagarai estate in Nilgiris dist, Billimalai estate etc. Seven cms rain was recorded in Nilgiris dist based Barliaaru and Keezh Kotagiri estate etc.
The release concluded that due to the formation of a new low pressure near Andaman Sea south Andaman and North Andaman regions would have cyclonic winds blowing at speeds of 55kmph on 27th November and cyclonic winds blowing at speeds of 65kmph on 28th November. Fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea on these 2 days.
