To construct storm water drains or SWD after the NE monsoon in January, the Chennai Corporation would identify new stretches in Chennai. This was according to the Chennai Mayor R. Priya.
The heavy rains in the last few days have caused flooding in certain areas in the city and the councillors have asked the Chennai Corporation to resolve the civic issues. The Chennai mayor spoke about how a team headed by Chennai Corporation Chief Engineer would assess the conditions in the areas that have been flooded by the heavy rains. Point is that the team would then submit a report regarding new areas in Chennai that would have to be considered for flood mitigation.
Work on the new storm water drains and canals etc would only be taken up in those areas that require such infrastructure. This was as pointed out by the Chennai Mayor R. Priya. It is known that SWD construction was carried out with the help of funds provided by agencies like Asian Development Bank eta.
It was then explained by Mr. E. Settu, of ward 24 of Puzhal in Chennai that the project for construction of a surplus course from Retteri was not implemented by the Chennai Corporation.
The issue of sewage overflow was flagged by the councillors in the council meeting. Better coordination between the officials from GCC and CMW was needed to resolve the civic issues due to the mixing of drinking water and sewage. The issue would be resolved and this was assured by the official belonging to CMW at the council meeting.
