In a significant move towards enhancing public transportation infrastructure, Chennai Metro Rail has initiated the process of taking over the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS). Although the formal agreement between the State government and Southern Railway is yet to be signed, preliminary efforts are underway to assess and improve MRTS stations.

Officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) have commenced inspections of MRTS stations, focusing on identifying opportunities for upgrade and determining additional facilities. While awaiting official approval, the station improvement work will be initiated based on the findings of these inspections.

Two stations, Thirumayilai and Tiruvallikeni, have been inspected as samples. CMRL plans to engage an agency to conduct a comprehensive study and provide assessments on upgrading the stations. The proposed enhancements encompass various aspects, including lighting, security measures, and passenger amenities. The ultimate goal is to elevate these stations to meet CMRL standards.

The takeover process is anticipated to be a gradual one. Initially, the Railways will continue to operate trains for a year, allowing for a seamless transition. The station upgrade initiative itself is expected to span at least a year post CMRL receiving the necessary approvals.

Beyond station improvements, the long-term plan includes an overhaul of related amenities and systems. Additionally, there are considerations for introducing air-conditioned coaches for MRTS trains. Upon completion of this process, commuters can anticipate a significantly improved travel experience on MRTS trains.
